Beginning Of The End For Blockbuster?

The new iPods were shown off yesterday. They have more solid state drives that will hold hours and hours of video plus they are thinner and if you tip them on their sides you can take advantage of the wide screen option for watching your movies. So more and more people will be downloading their movie selections from the Apple store. Plus you have video on demand services from cable companies and instants streaming access to movies being offered by companies like Amazon and Netflix.

Where does all this online movie access leave a company like Blockbuster? I mean let’s face it all this down loadable movie content does not exactly play to the strength of the business model for Blockbuster video. Just look at their stock price over the last years and you will see a slow decline from a price over $20 about 5 years ago to where it hovers now around $2.50. Now granted the amount of movies available for streaming download is very minimal at this point. The companies that are offering down loadable movies are most likely on the right road when you think of the future of how movies are going to be offered to the public. They are however probably just a few years away from getting the technology to the point where their movie libraries will be worth it to the everyday consumers.

For example Michael Moore has announced that he will be releasing his latest film on the Internet for free! Now I don’t think I agree with the free part but this is a bold move in terms of the distribution of a film. Imagine if more films were to bypass not only the DVD route but the movie theater as well. What would happen if all movies were to simply go to straight access to viewing right from the Internet. Is that ultimately the way of the future?

What do you think the future holds for the way hollywood distributes their movies? Are we seeing the beginning of the end of rent a movie stores or maybe even movie theaters all together? Please share your opinions on the future of movie distribution and thanks for reading.
