Should Hollywood Continue To Reboot Movies

What are your thoughts on the movies that are remakes of movies that have already been done? Even more common now are movie franchises that seem to go on hiatus for a few years only to come back as a “franchise reboot or re imagining”. It seems like every time I turn a page or click another website about movies I read about another movie that is a reboot for the past glory of the series.

Some prime examples of what I am talking about are movie series like the Terminator. I thought we were finally done with that series after T3. Not so fast if you thought Terminator 3 Rise of the machines was the last one you would be mistaken. There will be a new Terminator movie coming out in 2009 only six years from the last movie and they have declared this will be a whole new series starring Christian Bale as John Connor in Terminator Salvation. Speaking of Christian Bale he’s also responsible for the lead role in the new reboot of the Batman series so if that is any indication of what we will get from the new Terminator movie sign me up for the midnight premier.

One of the all time habitual series for stopping and restarting their series are the long running James Bond movies. The success of the opening weekend for Quantum of Solace the second movie for Daniel Craig as James Bond and this “series reboot” just had the biggest opening weekend for any Bond movie ever. Now Daniel Craig is the sixth actor to play this iconic character and with the success of the series getting stronger with each release he will most likely not be the last.

One more “series reboot” that I wanted to mention because I am very excited about is the new Star Trek movie that will be the most successful Star Trek movie to date, mark my words this one will be big! J.J. Abrams has put together a young cast that will play out the beginning of the TV series. If you have any doubts of the success of this “series reboot” just watch the new preview trailer that was just released this week. One last question can you think of any movies that were redone that just didn’t quite pull it off? The Hulk movies anyone?

Share Your Opinions and Thanks for Reading,

Carpe Diem!

IMHO Reboots can be good if done right and if they stick to the original theme of the original thing they are rebooting. The worse part of a reboot is if they stray from the 1st creators vision, case in point. there were two Will Ferrell movies that virtually destroyed 2 classic tv shows 1 Bewitched in its original show was about a man who married a witch and his coping with it. The rebooted version had Will Farrell’s character making a show called Bewitched and they hire an actress who oddly is a witch hmmmm very bad. 2 Land Of The Lost was a Saturday morning kids show about ” A family ” who gets transported into a prehistoric world. The rebooted one sexualized it and made Will that in the original tv was the dad romancing Holly who was his daughter in the old tv show, now in the reboot his is lab assistant, can you say incest yuckkkkkkk.

I totally agree with you! Will Ferrell movies are generally pretty good except when he has tried to do reboots of classic TV series. Hopefully after this summers BOMB of a movie Land of The Lost he will have learned his lesson and stick to more original story ideas. One can only hope ;-)
