With no big new movie releases over the weekend everything seems to be a little ho hum to the start of the 2009 movie season. The biggest news that I saw regarding movies over the weekend was that of a deal that was struck between Netflix and LG. The LG company announced that they will be shipping new HDTVs with internet capabilities and a direct link to Netflix and their on demand movie streaming service.
Netflix has been making a lot of moves lately from what I have seen in the news. They continue to push their on demand movie streaming service through every avenue they can manage to get into. While a direct competitor Blockbuster seems to be on the defensive with their streaming on demand service. From what I have seen from the Blockbuster on demand service they have hooked up with another company 2Wire. From what I can tell it looks like you will need to get another “converter box” to stream their movies. Gee just what I need another box and more wires for my entertainment center, no thanks blockbuster!
I think the Netflix approach to getting their on demand service out to the public is more viable. They are hooking up with other vendors that already have a service in the consumers homes like new HDTVs or the deal they struck with Xbox Live to give access to all those millions of gamers out there. Blockbuster needs to get their act in gear or they will be in danger of loosing the battle for the future of movie rentals. The future being streaming on demand movies.
I really think that within the next few years we will see the end of physical stores for movie rentals. The future for movie rentals is obviously going to be the on line stores or these new movie rental vending machines that are starting to pop up in grocery stores and Walmarts all over the country. These movie vending machines have rental rates of .99 cents and their in a store that most of us go to a couple of times a week already. Saving us an extra trip to a separate store and a cheaper rental fee.
